PBL and Literacy-Based Learning free!
January 27, 2021 | 7:00-8:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE Project-Based Learning nearly always calls for students to employ their literacy skills independently as they research to extend their knowledge, develop solutions, and as they communicate with each other, the teacher, and authentic audiences. Many students, however, are not yet proficient with these skills. This can be a concern that causes teachers to shy away from PBL, worried that their students "are not ready." In this session we will explore the importance of PBL in supporting students' literacy development and ways to structure projects so that all students can participate in literacy-based learning. |
Activating Equity and SEL in PBL free!
February 3, 2021 | 7:00-8:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE For projects to be engaging for all learners, educators must also consider the social and emotional learning (SEL) of their students. This requires savvy lessons that focus on equity, incorporate sound teaching strategies, and be social enough for the most digitally connected students. Join education coach Jorge Valenzuela for a session that will provide you pro tips, resources, and actionable steps to help you level up both your virtual and face-to-face PBL units by focusing on equity and SEL in tandem with academics. Facilitated by Jorge Valenzuela. |
Key Teaching Strategies for Math Based PBL free!
February 17, 2021 | 7:00-8:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE As math PBL teachers, we get asked a lot on how do you teach the content while doing PBL. It is an understandable and great question. It is not that you can’t lecture and do practice problems in a project. It is just that you do so much more. Join this session to learn some strategies to teach math concepts while doing a project. |
Increasing Student Engagement free!
February 24, 2021 | 7:00-8:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE “Engagement first, then content, then rigor. In that order.” - author, speaker, educator Kelly Gallagher If virtual classrooms have highlighted anything, it’s that Engagement is key. Join @TweenTeacher Heather Wolpert-Gawron as she shares some of the best engagement strategies featured in her book, Just Ask Us: Kids Speak Out on Student Engagement. After conducting a nationwide survey of students focused on what engages them as learners, educator Heather Wolpert-Gawron curated the most frequently named strategies. Join Heather as she shares advice on how to use those strategies in both the virtual and face-to-face classroom. Heather is a nationally recognized PBL expert and a staff blogger for Edutopia. You're in for a real treat meeting Heather - she'll have you hooked from the very first minute! |
Inclusive PBL Basics free!
March 3, 2021 | 7:00-8:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE Learn strategies and tools to successfully and meaningfully include students with disabilities in your PBL projects! Creating High Quality Rubrics free!
March 24, 2021 | 7:00-8:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE Rubrics are a common tool in education, so it is likely that you are familiar with and using them already - but are you getting as much out of your rubrics as possible? Rubrics help teachers to clarify expectations and assess work with consistency. When used effectively, they’re also a powerful tool to support students in producing high quality work. In this session, we will explore the creation of rubrics and look at how they can support the Gold Standard elements of Reflection and Critique and Revision. Facilitated by Erin Gannon. |
Understanding and Mastering Difficult Emotions for Educators free!
April 21, 2021 | 7:00-8:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE Emotional trauma results from an extraordinarily stressful event(s) that removes one's sense of security and leaves them feeling hopeless. When left resolved, emotions and feelings resulting from trauma carry over into adulthood, thus creating more trauma. Like anyone who's ever overcome a traumatic experience knows, you have to feel it to heal it. This requires emotional intelligence skills for confronting what we are experiencing internally. In this session, join eduction coach Jorge Valenzuela for practical steps to take for understanding emotions and implementing strategies for self-managing and restoring a peaceful state. |
SEL Infused PBL free!
April 28, 2021 | 7:00-8:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE Project Based Learning and Social Emotional Learning are two of the hottest trends in education right now. Unfortunately, they often get viewed as two different "programs". As Frey, Fisher and Smith advocate in All Learning is Social and Emotional, SEL should not be another added thing to teachers' plates. It needs to be integrated into the academic mainstream rather than remain on the periphery. PBL expert and Edutopia Blogger Mike Kaechele has spent considerable time researching and writing about how SEL and PBL are naturally interwoven. @MikeKaechele has created a podcast, a dedicated website, and Facebook site to share his work. Join Mike (virtually) in-person to learn how we can more purposely integrate SEL into your PBL practice. Facilitated by Mike Kaechele. |
Project-Based Writing: Deepening the Writing (and Listening and Speaking) Process Throughout a PBL Unit free!
May 5, 2021 | 7:00-8:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE Writing is a universal mode of communication that can help identify student needs at all levels. But writing assessments don’t just happen at the end of a unit. Writing isn’t just about quickwrites, rough drafts, and final drafts. Learn to scaffold writing assessments using engaging assignments for every part of the PBL unit, from unit launch to culminating presentation. Facilitated by Heather Wolpert-Gawron. |
How To Create and Cultivate a PBL Culture free!
May 12, 2021 | 7:00-8:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE Do our school districts, school sites and classrooms have everything they need to be successful project-based environments? It seems we may have the right standards, the new technology, the higher expectations, the community partners, the demands of the global economy and a collective call to action. With that impressive list, what could be missing that is still preventing wholesale PBL implementation? The simple, yet seemingly evasive answer is CULTURE. In order for teachers to serve as facilitators of learning, while students own and lead their learning, a different type of learning environment is required. And that’s made possible by a discreetly different CULTURE than is traditionally found. |

Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management Offered now-March 15, 2021 REGISTER HERE March 19-June 14, 2021 REGISTER HERE Classroom management is traditionally a matter of encouraging good behavior and discouraging bad by doling out rewards and punishments. But studies show that when educators empower students to address and correct misbehavior among themselves, positive results are longer lasting and more wide reaching. In Better Than Carrots or Sticks, the authors provide a practical blueprint for creating a cooperative and respectful classroom climate in which students and teachers work through behavioral issues together. The authors explain how to establish procedures and expectations for student behavior that encourage the development of positive interpersonal skills; develop a non confrontational rapport with even the most challenging students; and implement conflict resolution strategies that prioritize relationship building over finger-pointing and retribution. Rewards and punishments may help to maintain order in the short term, but they're at best superficially effective and at worst counterproductive. This book will prepare teachers at all levels to ensure that their classrooms are welcoming, enriching, and constructive environments built on collective respect and focused on student achievement. |
