June 30, 2021 OR August 5, 2021 | 9:00 am-3:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE Fee: $99 “Engagement first, then content, then rigor. In that order.” - author, speaker, educator Kelly Gallagher Even the most experienced of PBL-using teachers will tell you that a successful PBL-infused classroom does not develop units for every second of every day. What a real PBL-infused classroom does is embrace a PBL mindset that is infused with research-based engagement strategies. All.The.Time. If virtual classrooms have highlighted anything, it’s that Engagement is key. Join @TweenTeacher and Emeritus PBLWorks National Faculty Heather Wolpert-Gawron as she shares the best engagement strategies featured in her book, Just Ask Us: Kids Speak Out on Student Engagement. After conducting a nationwide survey of students focused on what engages them as learners, educator Heather Wolpert-Gawron curated the most frequently named strategies. Project-Based Writing: Deepening the Writing (and Listening and Speaking) Process Throughout a PBL Unit
July 1, 2021 OR August 6, 2021 | 9:00 am-3:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE Fee: $99 According to research in college and career readiness, writing is the most important skill students need for success in any future pathway. PBL encourages authentic writing tasks, but the fact is that writing assessments shouldn’t just happen at the end of a unit or for the final product. Writing isn’t just about quickwrites, rough drafts, and final drafts. And it doesn’t just happen in English class. Engaging assignments - and lessons to secure success in those assignments - should represent every part of the PBL unit, from unit launch to culminating presentation. No matter the subject area, teachers can learn how to encourage the growth of writing skills. Writing can take place throughout a PBL unit, so that it isn’t just used as a summative assessment. And teachers of all subject areas can learn how to assign and coach students to promote writing growth. In this day-long synchronous online workshop, you will walk away knowing how to use writing...
So join Emeritus PBLWorks National Faculty Heather Wolpert-Gawron, expert PBL teacher and coach, staff blogger for Edutopia, and Fellow of the National Writing Project, as she guides teachers in all subject areas to use writing throughout the PBL unit. |
Effective Literacy Practices in Project-Based Learning
July 13, 2021 | 9:00 am-3:00 pm REGISTER HERE Fee: $99 Project-Based Learning nearly always calls for students to employ their literacy skills independently as they research to extend their knowledge, develop solutions, and as they communicate with each other, the teacher, and authentic audiences. Many students, however, are not yet proficient with these skills. This can be a concern that causes teachers to shy away from PBL, worried that their students "are not ready." In this synchronous online session, we will explore the importance of PBL in supporting students' literacy development and ways to structure projects so that all students can participate in literacy-based learning. Participants will be guided through some planning steps so that new knowledge can be directly applied to existing projects or help guide future projects. Facilitated by Emeritus PBLWorks National Faculty, Cheryl Dobbertin. Graduate Credit: Select 2 one-day workshops of your choice to earn one-hour of Ashland graduate credit for an additional $249. Fairfield County ESC member districts may purchase one hour of Ashland University graduate credit at the discounted rate of $195. Please email rengel@fairfieldesc.org for the registration link. |

While engaging students in projects, teachers can naturally address students' readiness, interests, and learning preferences through differentiated content, process and products. However, each decision teachers make in differentiated project planning can either ensure that all students meet essential learning targets or inadvertently leave some students behind. In this synchronous online session, participants will acquire a full understanding of differentiation, analyze model differentiated projects, and practice using a planning tool that will support current or future project designs. Facilitated by Emeritus PBLWorks National Faculty, Cheryl Dobbertin. Graduate Credit: Select 2 one-day workshops of your choice to earn one-hour of Ashland graduate credit for an additional $249. Unfortunately, they often get viewed as two different "programs". As Frey, Fisher and Smith advocate in All Learning is Social and Emotional, SEL should not be another added thing to teachers' plates. PBL expert and Edutopia Blogger Mike Kaechele has spent considerable time researching and writing about how SEL and PBL are naturally interwoven. @MikeKaechele has created a podcast, a dedicated website, and Facebook site to share his work. Join Mike (virtually) in-person to learn how we can more purposely integrate SEL into your PBL practice. Facilitated by Emeritus PBLWorks National Faculty, Mike Kaechele. |

How To Create and Cultivate a PBL Culture free!
May 12, 2021 | 7:00-8:00 pm EST REGISTER HERE Do our school districts, school sites and classrooms have everything they need to be successful project-based environments? It seems we may have the right standards, the new technology, the higher expectations, the community partners, the demands of the global economy and a collective call to action. With that impressive list, what could be missing that is still preventing wholesale PBL implementation? The simple, yet seemingly evasive answer is CULTURE. In order for teachers to serve as facilitators of learning, while students own and lead their learning, a different type of learning environment is required. And that’s made possible by a discreetly different CULTURE than is traditionally found. Facilitated by Emeritus PBLWorks National Faculty, Michael Niehoff. |

Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management | asynchronous online book study
Now-March 15, 2021 March 19-June 14, 2021 June 1-August 20, 2021 REGISTER HERE Classroom management is traditionally a matter of encouraging good behavior and discouraging bad by doling out rewards and punishments. But studies show that when educators empower students to address and correct misbehavior among themselves, positive results are longer lasting and more wide reaching. In Better Than Carrots or Sticks, the authors provide a practical blueprint for creating a cooperative and respectful classroom climate in which students and teachers work through behavioral issues together. The authors explain how to establish procedures and expectations for student behavior that encourage the development of positive interpersonal skills; develop a non confrontational rapport with even the most challenging students; and implement conflict resolution strategies that prioritize relationship building over finger-pointing and retribution. Rewards and punishments may help to maintain order in the short term, but they're at best superficially effective and at worst counterproductive. This book will prepare teachers at all levels to ensure that their classrooms are welcoming, enriching, and constructive environments built on collective respect and focused on student achievement. |
